- Identify common unmet needs and environmental factors that may lead to behavioral expressions
- Develop effective responses to behavioral expressions, focusing on validation, connection, and engagement
- Understand the importance of person centered aproaches and how it influences the response to behavioral expressions
Bio:
Mary is the Memory Care Advisor at Willow Valley Communities. She enjoyed a 45 year career as a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist in both behavioral health and long-term care settings. Mary has a Master’s Degree in Health Education and for a number of years served as adjunct faculty teaching various courses in Therapeutic Recreation at York College.
It was in a long-term care environment where Mary spent time working closely with individuals living with dementia and their caregivers, families, and friends and learning continuously from every interactions.
Her responsibilities at Willow Valley include providing Memory Care Education for Team Members, caregivers, and volunteers, and facilitating Memory Care Support Groups and Memory Cafes. She is a certified Eden Educator, Certified Dementia Practitioner, and a Dementia Friends Champion. At the Marlin and Doris Thomas Memory Center, Mary works closely with volunteers.

Mary looks for any opportunity to be outdoors and travel. Her best buddy is a mini goldendoodle named Rosie.
